Small sailing boats

A small sailing boat is any yacht ranging from 16 - 25 feet (dingies and dinghy sailing do not fit in this category and they will be examined separately).  These vessels usually have a small cabin with the basics (2 berths, galley and a head).  Boats designed for pure racing purposes (like the J24 for example) will be examined separately.

Our aim is to present you on these pages firms building small sailing boats, as well as agencies -or owners- who charter them.  Any other info related to these little yachts will be included.

What can I do with a "little" yacht?

A small sailing boat is ideal for learning how to sail. Although the size is smaller than a conventional yacht  the basic principles of sailing are all there. You can tack, jibe, use a spinnaker or exercise manoeuvres in harbour, just like you would with a larger yacht.

On top of that there are things you can do with a small boat that are not possible with a large yacht. For example, you can tow it behind your car on a trailer to your favourite lake and sail there, or sail in shallow waters, rivers, etc., which would not be possible with a deep fin keel yacht.

Ok, you cannot cross the Atlantic with a small boat -although some have done that too, but other than that, you can enjoy the pleasures of sailing,- just like you would do with any size yacht.  All that, at less than half of the cost you would otherwise need to pay.

Who should buy a small sailing boat?
A small sailing boat is "economic" compared to any other kind of boat -smaller or larger.  Motor powered vessels of similar size (like RIBs or speed boats) have much higher running costs, when compared to larger yachts -except the purchasing cost, which is considerably lower- you will avoid paying berthing fees (your back yard is the perfect spot for winterizing) and in most of the countries the taxation -if there is any- is low.

Who, then, should consider buying such a vessel ?  Anyone whose financial situation does not allow something larger. It is also the perfect choice for any newcomer to the sailing fraternity, as it will introduce him/her to the pleasures of sailing without the need to spend a fortune.
