Featured Article: What is the "charter version" of a boat model

A lot of ink has been spilled over the last two decades over "charter boats", or to use the favourite yacht building companies' expression: "a yacht built with the charter market needs in mind".

Before we analyse what that means it is good to understand why the yacht builders came up building yachts for this market. Well, the answer is simple: Because there is a high demand for such vessels. For every single boat they build for private use there is a demand for three vessels which will be used for charters -at least for the first 5-10 years of their life.

After the early '80s and the chartering industry boom the yacht builders -pioneered by Jeanneau- took very seriously the increased demands for boats built for charter only. Trying to identify the first boat for this new category (until then there were only yachts built for pleasure or for races) the Jeanneau model Sun Fizz 40 comes to my mind. It was the first boat of this size offering a "two aft cabins" layout, a design still in use today for all charter yachts from 34 to 50 feet. But the -obvious- designing revolution was not the only feature this boat used to start a new category and philosophy in yacht building...

  Dear Alexander,

Well, folks, here we are again. Just to prove that the glitches which prevented the production of some of last year's editions are a thing of the past here is the February, 2007 rendering.

This time of the year it is time to do a bit of "armchair" fitting out, with the memories of the recent Boat Shows behind you. Preplan your navigation centre with all the latest chart plotters. Redesign your on-board communication equipment, especially if you are planning a long cruise. Upgrade some of your sail- handling equipment . The list is endless - but it all costs money !!

For a long time now I have been trying to convince yacht owners to advertise their special offers and discounts through these pages. Until now, I had to resort to calling them individually to ask them what offers they had, requesting a very small fee for my efforts to get them over to you. Only a couple of them responded positively.

Something was wrong. I know full well that all yacht owners have blank weeks on their booking sheets, which they would happily fill at a reduced price. They also know that @lmiyachts.com is a very popular website, with much greater coverage than their own and will be seen by many more people - potential charterers. Why didn't they respond ?

I had to approach the matter from a different direction. In today's hard world even a small fee creates negative thinking, or even a simple giving out of their credit card details. So, I scrubbed that and offered them the service for free.

Even then, the whole operation of having to call me, telling me of an offer, then send me an e-mail seemed too much for them. Then, I designed a software where all they had to do was to login and upload the offer. That did it. Geronimo !!

The reaction was immediate. Within two to three weeks 50 offers appeared on our page and more are added every day. I invite you to visit this page and take a look at them. Clicking on to the "request info" link will put you straight through to the owner offering the "deal", which may well solve all your sailing holiday problems - you can finalise the details direct with him.

Even if you are not yet ready to commit to your holiday booking just "bookmark" the page and visit it later. A holiday at a 60% discount is not to be sniffed at.

I sincerely hope that you enjoy this new @lmiyachts.com service and that you can take full advantage of it.

When cruising under sail and motoring at the same time (motorsailing) be very careful not to invoke too much inclination (angle of lean) - reduce sail accordingly. A very high angle of inclination (over 25 degrees) will move the oil level in the sump from below the pick-up pie, the oil pump will have nothing to draw on and BANG, serious damage can be caused. Be warned.
