Spetses island Old harbour

From the distance the houses of Spetses town around the northern shores and on the gentle slopes are easily seen.  Closer in, the lighthouse on Ak. Fanari is conspicuous.

Danger:  Care should be taken rounding the extremity of the headland where there are some above-water rocks and a short reef.  Also a reef of only 1 m. depths is located 500 m. from the entrance of the harbour and it is not marked in all charts.

Anchor in the bay of the outer harbour with a long line ashore or stern or bows-to in the inner harbour if there is room.

With strong NW winds the outer harbour is uncomfortable.  The inner harbour has excellent all-round protection and a number of yachts are wintered afloat here.

Spetses old harbour and environs is a wonderful place to wander around.  There are several yards building caiques and Spetsiot boats are said to be among the best in Greece.  Tim Severin had his replica galley built here for his voyages tracing the routes of Jason and the Argonauts and Odysseus wandering home from the Trojan war.

If you approach from northwest, you must first pass the Fanari lighthouse (which indicates the entrance) and after you sail the inner sea (3 miles) you may moor stern to the key.  If you choose to cross the straight and moor on the east part of the harbour, you must stay close to the left side of the canal.

The bottom holding is good and the harbour is safe in all weathers

The small town is busy and the quay is rather noisy until late night hours but it is worth a visit to one of its' many cafes, restaurants, bars and tourist shops.
