With a population of 1.700, Vathy is the capital of Ithaca and is found deep within an inlet of Aetos Gulf; it is not visible when one cruises past the island. It can provide most of boat's needs, other than hauling out.

The harbour provides good holding and shelter from all weathers other than north-westerlies which gust in fiercely, more so than on the open sea, because of the towering mountains. The best berths are on the west dock, south of the ferry boat ramp. Another possibility is along side or stern-to ahead of the cafe's south east of the berths mentioned above, in front of the dock next to the Port Authority, and along the extension of the shoreline (not on the eastern side where are shallows).

It may be necessary to move away if the north westerly is especially intense and blows in choppy waves. In that case the best choice is anchoring off in the small bay on the north side of the harbour.

Regular ferry-boat connection with Killini (Peloponese coast - about 2 hrs) and Kefalonia island
A national road links Killini to Athens (250 km).
Buses link Killini with Patras and Athens
The closest airport is at Kefalonia island.
