Aegean Sea in Greece

The Aegean Sea (Greek: Aigaion Pelagos) is an arm of the Mediterranean Sea, located between the Greek peninsula and Anatolia (Asia Minor, now part of Turkey).

The Aegean islands can be simply divided into five groups: North Aegean (Thracian Sea), the East Aegean, Sporades, the Cyclades, and Dodecanese. The word archipelago was originally applied specifically to these islands. Many of the islands have safe harbours and bays, but navigation through the sea is generally difficult.

The word archipelago was originally applied specifically to the Aegean Sea and its islands. Many of the Aegean Islands, or chains of islands, are actually extensions of the mountains on the mainland.  The larger islands have some fertile valleys and plains.

Ancient history

In ancient times there were various explanations for the name "Aegean". It was said to have been named after the town of Aegae in Evia; Aegea, a queen of the Amazons who died in the sea; and Aegeus, the father of the hero Theseus, who drowned himself in the sea when he thought his son had died.

The Aegean was the site of the original democracies, and it allowed for contact between several diverse civilizations of the Eastern Mediterranean.  The sea was the birthplace of two ancient civilizations - the Minoans of Crete, and Mycenaean Civilization of the Peloponnese. Later arose the city-states of Athens, Sparta among many others that constituted the Hellenic Civilization.

Medieval

The Aegean Sea was later occupied by Romans, the Byzantine Empire, the Venetians, the Seljuk Turks, and the Ottoman Empire.

Finally, the Aegean became part of the modern Greek state, after the succesful revolution against the Turks in 1821.  Yet, some parts of the Archipelago reunited with Greece much later, for example the Dodekanese became Greek only after WW2 in 1945 (it was under Italian rule until then).

   The Aegean Sea today

Today, the islands of the Aegean Sea offering the visitor a wide range of possibilities.  From the extreme cosmopolitan life of Myconos or Santorini to the quietest isolated beaches of Folegandros or Anafi.  Culture of 4000 years civilisation and unique sightseeing -like the cave, where Evangelist St John wrote the Apocalypse on Patmos island; or famous sport centres -like the windsurfing centres of Paros island.  The list is endless and one will need to visit the area many times.

Yet, in spite of the characteristics, which the islands have in common, sparkling sea, sun, the landscape, and the austere line of the architecture - each retains its own individual features, which visitors can discover as they explore them one by one.

The whole area is served by several international airports on the major islands, smaller airports serving daily connection with Athens and other Greek cities and a large fleet of ferry boats and modern high-speed hydrofoils connecting all the islands.
