Small ship cruises
A small ship cruise is the cruise on
a boat capable of carrying 30 to 500
passengers. Less than that (on a
smaller vessel) is called "sailing cruise"
or "cabin charter", when sailing on larger
boats (more than 500 pass.) is called just
"cruise".
Cruising on a small ship has many advantages
compared to the other cruise categories.
Less guests onboard means better personal
care and in general more "human" conditions
during the trip. Also, a smaller boat
can enter in most of the visited Ports,
harbours and bays, when a large cruise ship usually
is anchored in the open sea and the passengers
are transferred ashore with smaller local
boats.
On the other hand, you should not expect
some of the
luxury and facilities you can find only on a
big ship (how can you fit a movie house in a
small boat?).
The small ship cruise vessels can be either
motor-yachts, powered by motor only, or
motorsailers powered by motor and auxiliary
sails. Recently, catamarans of both
type have enter the market. |

HOW MUCH IT WILL
COST ME?
Usually, you must book a cabin (for two guests and
sometimes for three). The price will vary from
US$ 800 to US$ 3.000 per person per week, depended on the
location of the cabin (upper or lower decks), the period
of your trip (peak or low season) and the luxury level of
your chosen cruise. If you are single and still
you would like the use of a cabin only on your own, you
should estimate a 30% extra charge.
Usually, the price includes breakfast and half-board
(meal or dinner). Local taxes, VAT, harbour fees
are sometimes charged as "extras", so make sure you
discuss and sort out all these costs with your agent.

Where you can enjoy a
cruise on a small ship |
| |
Practically,
in any destination country, where there are
ordinary cruises, you will also find
agencies operating smaller boats.
Mediterranean,
Red Sea, the Caribbean, Alaska and
Norway are some of the most popular
destinations in the Northern hemisphere
South Africa, Australia and in some S.
American countries are areas where you
will find small ship cruises in the Southern
hemisphere. |
