Jeanneau Sun Odyssey
42,2
|
The
Sun Odyssey 42,2 replaced in the late 90's the 42,1 model of
the company. With very few changes from the previous model,
she offers accommodation for 8 guests in two aft and two front
cabins (Jeanneau offers also an "owners" version, where the front cabins
are combined to one large "owners" cabin with en-suite facility).
Designed to be simple to sail and highly stable, the SUN ODYSSEY
42,2 can sail in reasonable speed and angle against the wind.
Care has been taken in the finishing, when the layout follows the
standards of the boats of her size (relatively small cabins, large
and well ventilated saloon with the galley and navigation area across the left side
when the dinette and the one head (the other head is in front,
across the twin cabin) on the right).
The saloon space is
sufficient for the 8 guests this boat can accommodate, light and
well ventilated. For that ventilation major role played the
two side (one on each side of the saloon) hatches, which can open.
Yet, I find this short of ventilation a bit dangerous, because they
easily go under the sea surface when sailing -especially with side
winds. Just imagine what will happen if one forgets to shut
them in time (nevertheless the fact that the sealing these hatches
offer is good when the yacht is new, but as the years pass becomes
rather "poor". A leak probably will not sink the boat but it
will wet the dinette cushions and make your life uncomfortable). |
|
All cabins are reasonably sized -taking into consideration that this
is only a 42 footer- with the exception of the front twin (upper and
lower berths) cabin which is small. Definitely not enough
space to accommodate two adults and their luggage. This boat's
design is a perfect example of the "let's pack as many guests as
possible in the given area" syndrome, as this design will drop the
"per head" charter price and it will make the model affordable and
desirable to the charterers. In my opinion, you need at least
the volume a 44 footer offers in order to start thinking of a four
cabins layout and any boat below that size with four cabins is just
"packing".
The large -teak covered- cockpit has plenty of
space for eight guests and offers easy access to the sea level from
the "sugar-scoop" designed transom. All the halyards and
sheets can be handled from here, without the need for leaving the
cock-pit area. The Sun Odyssey 42,2 is a "good" sailor,
capable of sailing with very light winds indeed and in good angle
when the wind is on your "nose". The only remark I can make
for her sailing performances is that she "bends over" with very
light winds and a sail reefing and trimming is absolutely necessary
when the wind picks-up a bit. To give you an example, with
only 4-5 bf wind we needed a 3rd reef and the yacht was sailing with
the rails under water (what will happen if you sail at 7 or 8 bf and
what kind of sail you will need to use, I don't really know but I
can imagine -wind surfing size).
To summarize, the Jeanneau
Sun Odyssey 42,2 is a good choice for the charterer who likes to
sail with a relative "large" group (8 persons), but doesn't want to
pay a lot of money for that. In return, he will need to
compromise the the space -and the luxury offered- from the vessel.
Taking into consideration that this model was built in 1997-99 and is
rather "old", the charter price you will be asked to pay is
attractive. The vessel is popular amongst the agencies, so you
will find her offered for charters in all the major destination
countries and in several agents' fleet catalogues. |
