Bavaria 49 demonstrates how comfortable a functional
sailing yacht can be. With its spacious interior, the Bavaria 49
provides exceptionally ample room and remarkably generous stowage,
which makes the 5-cabin-version an ideal charter yacht for families
and crews up to ten persons.
A divided forestay and twin
steering wheels are are offering an
easy entrance
and access to the sea level.
All halyards and
controls lead back to the cockpit and are serviced by two
self-tailing halyard winches. If at yachts below 40 feet two
winches only are acceptable, on a 49 footer it is not and Bavaria
should had equip this vessel with at least four winches.
Besides that, the handling is easy and makes you wander if you
control a 50 or a 35 footer. On the breeze you can forget
about playing the traveller. It's the same system as on the old
Bavaria 40 and is not only too short, but also loads up too easily -
and once eased, it's very hard to pull back up.
In
performances, she is fast in all courses -except against the wind
(the usual charter boats are using the 1,80 fin keel with wings.
Bavaria offers the option of a 2,10 deep fin keel and I guess that
with this keel her performances will improve).
Walking down
the steps the interior is finished in mahogany. All yachts in
the Bavaria range are roomy, and the 49 certainly takes full
advantage of the 4.46m beam. The
U-shaped
galley to starboard is fully equipped with gas stove and
oven, fridge, freezer and twin stainless-steel sinks.
Just aft of the galley is the
chart table,
which has plenty of room for electronics and storage and even offers
a handy tool compartment under the seat. There are two heads aft on
the port and starboard sides.
One thing I noticed about the
interior was the lack of overhead handholds, which could prove a
problem at sea. There are handholds along the sides of the interior,
but with the broad beam, I'd prefer a couple overhead just to be
sure.
The Bavaria 49 offers a real
5 cabins
layout -not a 4+1 skipper's cabin as most of the competition
does. All cabins have enough room for 2 guests. This
extra cabins' space is in the expense of the saloon, which is
smaller than one expects from a boat of this size.
The
charter price at € 4.600 per week is excellent and very few yachts
can match it. |
