Bavaria 37
|
The
Bavaria 37 was first built by the German firm in the year 2000 and
remained in production until 2003. Recently, this year, the company
launched a new model - the Bavaria 37C (C = cruiser), but this
model will be reviewed on this site in the very near future.
Designed to be simple to sail, wheel helmed, the Bavaria 37 comes in
two versions, owner's and charter, the former having the traditional
single
large aft cabin, and a huge (by category standards)
heads, and the latter offering the usual two aft cabin
layout. As expected, you will normally find the 3
cabin version amongst the charter fleets.
In both versions the boat only offers one heads - which is unusual
in boats of this type as many boast two, and sometimes three heads..
In my opinion one heads should be ample for a boat of this size as
the extra space this frees up is a bonus.
All the "goodies" a charterer expects to find are here. In-mast
furling on the main and roller furling genoa, electric anchor
windlass, hot water and deck shower are all standard equipment. Teak
decks and a more powerful engine are only found on a few examples of
the model, being optional "extras". Typically, the yacht is
fitted with a 27hp Yanmar or a 30hp Volvo, which I find a bit small
for a boat of this length. When motoring against high winds -
above 30 knots - she is definitely underpowered and the absence of a
more powerful engine does make itself felt.
The bright saloon has the dinette and settees on the starboard side,
with the galley along the port side. The finish follows Bavaria's
high standard and great care has been taken in the small details,
yet the quality of construction is light and below the levels you
would expect from such a reputable company. This has manifested
itself from the late 90's and is yet again an example of a company
which allows the accountants to influence the decisions of designers
and management -major error (side note: There is a well known
principle that if you look after the product and the customer the
profits will look after themselves. Many a company has gone
"under" failing to appreciate that fact. Accountants must
never be allowed to run companies !).
Although the quality of materials is less likely to worry a
charterer than an owner, the outcome is that the Bavaria is cheaper
to buy than their French counterparts, Jeanneau & Beneteau,
therefore the charter price is lower.
Would I consider the Bavaria 37 for my charter. Definitely
yes. The boat is a good sailor and offers all the modern equipment
and facilities. On top of that the charter price is 10-15% lower
than other yachts of the same size and type. |
