The
Bavaria 31- designed by J & J Design and built by Bavaria
Yachtbau GmbH in Northern Bavaria from 1999 until 2001 only (maybe
that is one of the reasons you will not find this model on most of
the agencies catalogues -the other reason is that the charter
agencies are not so keen on chartering this size boats, as their
commission is relatively small when their liability towards you is
just the same as if you have chartered a 50 footer).
Yet, there is nothing wrong with this little yacht. The cockpit is relatively large, and the helmsman has good
visibility and leg support. The pedestal is more of a console with a
molded display for both sailing and engine instruments, with easy
access to the single-lever throttle control. The steering is made by
Whitlock, and it is quite responsive.
The cockpit seats are covered with
teak, as is the cockpit sole, a feature I prefer to the more
traditional teak grating and the seat backs are angled for comfort. There
is only one
decent-sized cockpit locker and a swim step and boarding platform
aft. There are well-positioned stainless steel grab rails over the
companionway, although there isn’t much of a bridge deck, and you’ll
have to keep the hatch boards in place to keep an errant wave from
entering the cabin.
The
galley and the head are respectively left and right -as soon as you
enter the saloon, and the dinette with couches both sides occupies the
rest of the room. You will need to "lower" at least one of the
table's sides in order to advance to the forward cabin. The height of the saloon
is not sufficient and a tall person cannot walk without bending.
The things I didn't like on this vessel are the absence of a bimini
(the design of the boom, where the main halyard is supported on the
steering wheel's column, forbids the use of a bimini), the small
water capacity -only 100 lt.- and the height of the saloon.
Equipped with wheel helming (standard version), hot
water and electric windlass (optional, but you will find them on most of the
boats available for charter in the market), the Bavaria 31 is a
very good choice for the
charterer, who likes to sail with a small crew (2-3 max.). Yes
the boat is small, but the charter price will compensate the
charterer. |
