Flotillas
in the Ionian Sea
Offering an ideal location for the inexperienced or family
yachtsman, the Ionian islands remain pleasantly unspoiled,
with safe, clear, warm waters and gentle winds.
The islands
are a lush, fertile green, covered in olive and cypress
trees , intermingled with stark, white-washed houses,
churches and picturesque fishing ports.
The Ionian is very popular for safe and easy
cruising. Most of the sailing is short
distances in sheltered waters between the
islands and the mainland coast. Navigation
is straightforward with no tides, currents
or other hazards. Anchor in picturesque bays
or moor up in bustling fishing harbours.
Most of the Ionian flotillas
depart from Corfu or Lefkas islands.
Yet, other starting ports -like Preveza,
Palairos or Plataria are possible.
Flotilla
sailing in this part of the world is one of the best choices
for the whole family or the inexperienced sailor. |

How to get there |
The area is served from two airports accepting
international and charter flights.
One is Corfu airport and the other is Preveza
airport -some 12 km from Lefkas island.
The distance between the
airports is 110 km (One hour with a taxi, but
together with the ferry boat from Corfu to the
mainland port of Igoumenitsa, it makes a total of 3
hours trip). If you cannot find a suitable
flight for one destination, you may consider the
other and take the 3 hrs trip to reach your flotilla
starting port.
There are also 4-5 daily
ferries connecting Corfu and Igoumenitsa
with several ports of Italy. |

Flotilla yacht types |

Some boat models are more
suitable for flotilla sailing
than others and they are
preferred from the operators.
In mast furling system for the
main sail, shallow keel type and
the ease of handling are some of
the characteristics for these
vessels.

CorfuThe charter flights
for Corfu are scheduled on Mondays,

in the north part of Corfu and the
coast of mainland Greece across.
Fishing villages, like Sayada (where
they serve the best shrimps in the
region) or Ag. Stefanos and small

the Port of Call in the
North Corfu itinerary, or
- visit the southern
part of Corfu, adjacent islands of
Paxos and Antipaxos and the coast of
mainland Greece across. Petriti village on Corfu, Port Gaios and
Lakka bay on Paxos, as well as Parga town on mainland Greece, are some
of the places you will visit on the
South Corfu itinerary.
A two week holiday maker will join both itineraries

Lefkas you may visit ports on Lefkas and
the adjacent Meganissi islands, Ithaca,

When is the best time
to sail |
If you are a beginner, it is
probably a good idea to avoid the first
or last few weeks of the sailing season
(May – October) as these periods can be
a little more testing.
On the
other hand, these are periods that
attract more experienced flotilla
sailors who relish the slightly windier
conditions than mid-summer normally
provides! From mid-May to mid-October,
you will normally encounter settled
‘summer sailing' conditions.
July
and August are the hottest months -in
temperature, but also price-wise as
these are the high-peak period months. |
