Flotillas
in Greece
Greece is an idyllic country for flotilla
holiday makers. The environment of the
Greek Islands in particular is one of the
safest in the world. There are no tides, no
significant swell and no complicated
navigation.
Yet, not all of the Greek sailing areas
are suitable for flotillas. The Cyclades and
the Dodecanese, with the strong "meltemi"
(the usual NW wind) that blows fiercely
sometimes, do not offer the best conditions
for a family vacation, like a flotilla.
Therefore you will not find operators in
these areas (with the exception of the
eastern Dodekanese islands -Kos and
Kalymnos).
The best -and most popular- areas are
the Ionian islands (starting from Corfu or
from Lefkas), the Sporades -starting from
Skiathos and the Saronic Gulf starting from
Athens and visiting the adjacent Islands and
the East coast of Peloponnese.

Where you will find flotillas in
Greece |
|
|
| Flotilla
sailing in this part of the world is one of the best choices
for the whole family or the inexperienced sailor. |
|
When is the best time
to sail |
If you are a beginner, it is
probably a good idea to avoid the first
or last few weeks of the sailing season
(May – October) as these periods can be
a little more testing.
On the
other hand, these are periods that
attract more experienced flotilla
sailors who relish the slightly windier
conditions than mid-summer normally
provides! From mid-May to mid-October,
you will normally encounter settled
‘summer sailing' conditions.
July
and August are the hottest months -in
temperature, but also price-wise as
these are the high-peak period months. |

Operators and clients |
|
| |
The flotillas in Greece are
organised either, from huge operators
like the Sunsail and OCC, or from
smaller agencies (usually combined from
dual nationalities, Greek operators and
an agency in another country, taking
care for the promotion).
In the first case, the clients are
always origin from the same country and
nationality (i.e. from UK for the
Sunsail, or from Holland for OCC), when
the smaller companies sail more
multi-nation flotillas. Still the
majority of their clients are British
and Dutch -as flotilla sailing is very
popular in these two countries- but you
will also find clients from various
other countries.
