Bare boat charters tips
On bare boat charters there are some
procedures which, if followed, will make life easier, make
better use of your time and maximize the pleasure of your
sailing holiday. On this page I will try to give you
the most common of them, which will apply in most places and
are practiced by most bare boat charter agencies.
Upon your arrival try to give your agency plenty of warning
regarding your flight details i.e. flight number
and ETA. If you have arranged to be picked up -
go immediately to the rendezvous point specified
on your voucher.
Do not assume that, because you
booked through a large, well-known agency,
someone will know that name. You may have
been booked by your agency with a third-party
local agent, or even an individual boat owner,
who represents that agency at your destination
and nobody
there
has ever heard of your agency.
Make sure you have the name and
telephone number of the locally appointed party,
together with boat's name and the location of
the marina. |

Delivery of your vessel |
| Normally the bareboat contract
starts late in the afternoon, about 1700
hrs, and ends about 0900 hrs. This
gives the base crew sufficient time to
service, maintain and clean the yacht
between two charters.
If you arrive early and your vessel
is not ready to be handed over to
you, the best thing to do is to ask
the agency to look after your
luggage, give you an approximate
time when the yacht will be ready,
so that you can occupy your time to
your advantage - shopping, swimming
or sightseeing. |

Checking-in
 |
After the completion of the necessary paperwork you will be shown to
your yacht, which, by then, should be full of diesel and water and have
been cleaned. The skipper and his first mate will then go through
the check-in with a member of the base crew, or the boat owner.
They will help you check the boat's inventory with the aid of an
inventory list, and go through the details of the engine, electrics,
sails and deck equipment. This should take about two hours.
Try not to rush this procedure in an attempt to set sail as quickly as
possible, as it is important that you ask questions about anything you
do not clearly understand.
A thorough check-in will ensure an
enjoyable and safe sailing trip. |
